FAVORITE LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE COUPLES

Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder and Almanzo James Wilder

at first  they were nothing more than friends,  because he had no feelings towards her since she was younger than him. gradually her feelings for him grew, but he still didn't see her in that way.  finally just prior to her 16th birthday he stopped to see her at the school she was teaching at and punched a student in the gut for what he thought was making passes at Laura.. Laura told him off.  he relayed the story to Pa so  that Pa could pick her up on her actual birthday.

Pa does just that but then talked to laura and asked her why she did what she did to christy at the circus that one time- and she said "because i love Almanzo"   and then he said well why do you think Almanzo did what he did?  she responded "oh pa do you think Almanzo loves me?"

later at the church social Laura arrives with her parents and is told Almanzo is out back. she goes to talk to him, and he apologizes for the school incident and they realize that neither of them has a date for the social, so he asks her if he could be her "escort"  he gives her her birthday present- a beautiful shawl and she comments that it looks like she is wearing his colors.. and he tells her he hopes so and they share a sweet kiss.

after several ups and downs in their relationship Laura and Almanzo finally marry , they welcome a daughter Rose,  during a time when Alamanzo is confined to a wheelchair after a stroke, the farm is destroyed by a storm and tornado that takes out their house, yet somehow  despite all that and his sister Eliza coming back to walnut grove and babying him like crazy and seemingly pushing laura out of the picture-- she convinces Almanzo to sell the farm and move to minneapolis with her.

Laura has enough  and confronts her and Almanzo.  Almanzo then works really hard to get better and rebuild their home without Laura knowing.  once they are over that hurdle they are dealt another blow when Rose comes down with small pox after they had been in red wing. right before rose is diagnosed  the awaken one morning to find that their newborn son, who was unnamed at that point  was dead in his crib.   his headstone simply read baby boy wilder.  Rose was then diagnosed, and Doc baker took up residence  in the barn to care for her .. Mr Edwards  risked his health as well by talking supplies of soap and rubbing alcohol to the wilder home and leaving them outside where doc baker would come grab them.

somehow they got through everything that was handed to them and they did it together-- my favorite  couple

Adam Kendall and Mary Ingalls Kendall

Mary met Adam when Charles and Caroline sent her to a school for the blind in Iowa(i think it was) so she could learn to do things for herself again. at first she absolutely hated the school and was very defiant towards him.. she slowly started coming around with his help, and then when he showed her she could still read(which was her favorite thing to do) i think that really turned things around for her.

her Ma and Pa were impressed with her improvement when they came to visit. Mary tells them that Adam is going to teach blind kids in winoka territory and that he wants her to come with and help him.
and that she would be a teacher just as she and Ma had always planned on.

The day she left to go home to get her things together to go to winoka territory with adam,  she asked him what he looked like and he  told her as she touched his face, and then he dropped a bombshell on her-- that  he had never seen her either as he too was blind. so she told him what she looked like as he  touched her face.

they would end up marrying in  winoka after a huge dustorm, and huge case of nerves by Mary that almost derails the whole wedding.

they got through it and a couple blind school moves, Mary suffered a miscarriage  at one point before giving birth  to a healthy son name Adam Charles Holbrook Kendal..  tragically he perished in the blind school fire.

Adam regains his sight,  and mary worries she will be a burden to him now because of her being blind and him wanting to be  a lawyer..  but like everything else they were thrown, they get through it together.. one of my favorite couples

Reverend Robert Alden and Anna Craig

They were such a sweet couple-- everyone in walnut grove thought so, they became engaged and  Anna nursed him back to health when he became sick and run down. and harriet didn't like that either in fact she tried to get him removed from the church.  because of that he broke off their engagement.. she wrote the head of the church and he came to walnut  grove and got harriet to see the error of her ways.

Rev Alden and Anna were married a couple days later.  sadly she was only mentioned in one other episode and it was said she was out of town caring for a sick relative. she was never seen on the show again nor was she ever mentioned after that(the woman who played her had passed away during a break in filming  i think)

Willie Oleson and Rachel Brown Oleson

Not much is known about their relationship beginnings, but she is in his graduating class.  they get along well together and are going to get married, but willie has to get up the nerve to ask her father first..  Harriet on the other hand despises Rachel (for no reason that i can tell) and the fact the willie doesn't want to go to college(or university as they referred to it)  harriet goes behind his back and has the teacher Miss Plum make him an appointment to take the university entrance exam..

unbeknownst to Harriet, willie fails the exam on purpose.  he then gets Rachels dad's blessing to marry her.  he is elated!

when his test results come back harriet rips the envelope from his hands and opens it and reads it aloud and is aghast that he had failed, she freaks out saying the town can't know about him failing and that she was going to get him a tutor and he was going to study hard and she would get him another appointment to take the exam again..

to which he told her he had failed on purpose, and that he wasn't taking it again and that he was staying in walnut grove to run the restaurant and he was going to marry Rachel.
Harriet is shook up and nancy tries to suck up and comfort her.

one day Rachel goes into the restaurant and tells willie in the kitchen that she can't marry him, and he asks what he has done to make her feel that way, and she told him that it wasn't him , but, his mother- she had overheard her in the post office when she went to mail the wedding invitations to her relatives back east. harriet was telling the postmistress that rachel was ruining his chances at a happy ife and a few other things.

Willie was fuming and he and Rachel went to the mercantile and he proceeded to tell his mother off-- it was awesome!!

he and Rachel are married a day or two later by reverend alden and harriet attends dressed in full mourning attire.

Nellie Oleson and Luke Simms

Nellie fell head over heels with Luke the first time she saw him in school- he was the son of a pig farmer.. his dream was to have the biggest pig farm in Minnesota..  he was just as smitten with her as she was with him.

after he had dinner with her family, Harriet forbid her from seeing him again except for at school because she didn't want her to be "the pig queen of Minnesota"  Nellie ran up to her room crying.  Harriet tried to meddle further saying she had seen Luke shopping for a ring with Mary Ingalls(she was helping pick a birthday present for Nellie)

Luke gives her the ring for her birthday and they kiss.  when they are on a picnic with miss beadle and lukes father, luke talks to Nellie away from the adults and asks her to be his missues.  she tells him she has to think about it cause she feels like she is too young(im guessing she was maybe 13 or 14)

after talking to miss beadle about marriage she finds luke and accepts his proposal and they make plans to elope as soon as possible because of her mother.

they elope  and when harriet finds out Nellie left town with luke she is irate! nels doesn't seem to angry and goes to get the wagon and she tells him to grab the shotgun..  after talking with  lukes dad and miss beadle they come to the conclusion that luke and nellie have gone off and gotten married.

they head into sleepy eye and awaken the justice of the peace at some ungodly hour and he confirms that they had been there and had gotten married.  they head off in separate directions to find nellie and luke and they find them at a hotel.

Nels and Harriet barge in just in time to see Nellie in her robe pajamas and night cap and luke in his union suit about to kiss and harriet says "Nels, make her a widow!"  he refuses, and she tries to grab the gun and shoots a hole in the ceiling causing Luke to run out of the hotel in his union suit(its a funny scene)  needless to say they go back to the justice of the peace and the marriage of Luke and Nellie was annulled

Eliza Jane Wilder and Harve Miller

Harve was a schoolhood friend of Almanzo's who was visiting walnut grove, and Eliza was smitten with him right away..  he was very shy, and quiet.. but they seemed to get along well, she taught him to dance and they had a couple dinners together.. on their own. they seemed to get along really well..

But, the reality was, he was leading her on... he was engaged to another woman. and from what i know he never told Eliza..

Eliza would go on to make up a fictitious relationship with harve and the two of themarrying and leaving walnut grove, thereby leaving almanzo their parents house and Laura the walnut grove teaching position, so Laura and almoanzo wouldn't have to wait to be married.

Charles finds out about the plan and she tells him she wants to start a new life on her own in minneapolis, but almanzo would never let her  go off on her own-- and that once she was settled and teaching again she would write  Almanzo and tell him that things with her and Harve didn't work out.   and that she wants nothing more than her brother to be happy.

                                                             Doc Baker and Kate Thorvald

Harriet's young niece(im guessing she was between 19-22 years old) comes to visit Walnut grove and stays with her Aunt and Uncle.   she  is a pretty young woman and immediately falls for Doc Baker after he treats her after she falls from her buggy i believe it was.  then he treats her awhile later for another injury.

after a bit Doc Baker is completely smitten with her and  they go for buggy rides together.  internally doc is worried about their age difference(it was never said what the difference was)  but ultimately decides to make a ring from one of his daddy's gold watch chains.  after one of their rides, he proposes to her  on their way to a party Harriet is throwing for her.  she accepts and they head into the party.

Doc goes outside to think after awhile and she comes out and convinces him to go back in so they can share their happy news- he tells her he is a s nervous as a schoolboy.

He announces their engagement which harriet is none too pleased about.

a few days or so later(no timeline is given)  Doc is called to deliver an Irish woman's baby and Kate is there to help him.  after delivering her healthy baby girl, he comes to the sudden realization, that not only had he been the one to deliver her daughter, he had also delivered her and her husband when they were born as well.

once they are back in walnut grove outside the oleson's he breaks off the engagement  due to their age difference and let's her keep the ring he made for her.

i was disappointed the had them break up as they really were a cute couple.

Nellie Oleson Dalton and Percival Dalton

While Nellie may have been an obnoxious spoiled brat growing up,  something happened when she met Percival- who her mother had hired to teach her how to cook and clean and run the restaurant and hotel that Harriet had gifted her upon graduating so she could "land a man"(i doubt Nellie knew that was the reason)

at first she balked at the idea of being tutored by him and cracked an endless amount of short jokes aimed at him since she was taller than him.. after once such encounter he told her off and dumped a bowl of raw eggs on her head...  but, all that she got out of the whole exchange was that he had called her "pretty"

she began learning in earnest and improving rapidly. one night he tells her that he is leaving the next day, and retires to bed.

the next morning Harriet and Nels find her sobbing in her bedroom, because she realizes she has feelings for Percival, and he is leaving town..   Harriet has a fit when she says she loves Percival. in fact she tells nellie she can't love him because he is too short, and that she will find her a nice tall man.... yeah... that didn't go over well.

Nels convinces Nellie to go talk to Percival and tell him she loves him Harriet balks and says a lady doesn't do things like that..

Nellie tells percival she loves him and he reveals he loves her too, then he asks her to marry him(seemed a little odd with never having dated but i guess thats how they  did it back then) she says yes and they kiss in the middle of the street - which harriet has a fit about, her anger only grows  tenfold when she finds out that there cant be a church wedding, because Percival was Jewish!

Nellie and Percival are married a couple days later in an outdoor ceremony by Dr Baker.   Nellie and Percival would have 2 children  Benjamin and Jennifer.. and ultimately move away from walnut grove after Percivals father dies, so they move to NY and help his mother run their family store.

Nellie and Percival had really great chemistry together and were funny together.

LIttle House on the Prairie couple- Charles and Caroline Ingalls

one of my favorite couples on the show bar none is Charles and Caroline Ingalls(ma & pa) they are so adorable together! they seemed as though they were no nonsense parents and when the girls got out of line they got a stern lecture and there were consequences--

even when laura got into that fight in front of the restaurant in her late teens(she was married to almanzo at that point too) Ma helped to break up the fight and when laura was trying to say what she would have done had it not been broken up-- ma exclaimed very sternly "you will be silent!!"

Ma was also the voice of reason when laura and almanzo squabbled or when pa didn't like the idea of laura and almanzo being together. Ma also had a strong dislike for mrs oleson(who in walnut grove didn't? LOL!)Pa was a typical farmer that loved his family and he too didn't care for Nellie and her mother, but always tried to do the right thing--

there was even an episode where he tried to find a home (or homes) for a widows children after she passed away and had to make a decision that he didn't want to when it involved keeping the widows kids together.
